Clawfather Says Models Are Done. Imagination Is Next.

Two OpenClaw appearances at Microsoft Build, one repeated claim, and the strange fact of who kept saying it.

Across two nights of Build week, the fastest growing open source project in history appeared in two registers. First a GitHub HQ fireside: 🦄 Peter Steinberger beside investor Dave Morin, The Linux Foundation chief Jim Zemlin closing, a maintainer panel after. Then a Build breakout the next day, Steinberger alone, deck half-broken, walking through a talk called build the thing that builds the thing.

One sentence carried across both rooms, nearly verbatim. The models are good enough now. What stays scarce is imagination.

That sentence lands oddly from a man who has drawn an OpenAI paycheck since February. Creator of a viral project, now employed inside the largest model lab, standing in a Microsoft-owned building, arguing that better models are no longer the constraint. Not modesty. A thesis about where value moved.

Prompt Requests, Not Pull Requests

Steinberger refuses to call them pull requests. He calls them prompt requests. An issue and a PR are interchangeable, both just a signal that someone is unhappy with what got built and wants a change. The famous slop problem, ten thousand agent-authored issues piling up, dissolves once the frame shifts. Slop is not noise to fight. It is demand to route.

So he built routing. An agent reads a vision file describing what the project wants and refuses, then comments or closes. Roughly fifteen thousand issues cleared that way. The same loop reruns weekly, surfacing fixes that landed on main before anyone read the original complaint. The maintainer stops triaging and starts supervising triage.

This is the operator-educator move made literal. The job is no longer building software faster. The job is helping an agent build software faster.

Annoyance As Design Surface

The talk’s real method is smaller and more human than its tooling. Listen when you’re annoyed, Steinberger said. Annoyance is a signal you can automate this.

Every tool in the deck began as friction. Tests melting laptops became cloud test boxes spanning twenty providers. A Windows-only bug became boxes that reproduce across operating systems, then a video agent that records the bug, fixes it, records the fix, and waits for one human press of merge. Rate limits became a shim that borrows a higher quota. None of it is load-bearing. Most of the code went unread by its author. The tools exist so the work can compound, each one making the next faster to build.

That compounding is the quiet center. A small team holds a massive codebase not through heroics but through instruments that observe their own output. A review loop that reviews itself. A codebase split into fifty parts so review can fit in context. Coherence, not capability, is what these tools manufacture.

Institutions Wrap Thing Nobody Owns

Night one showed the other half of the picture. Zemlin framed thirty years of skipped tests and deferred threat models as a bill now due, because attackers hold the same accelerants everyone else does. Eighty-five to ninety percent of the security advisories flooding the project are slop. Each still gets read.

The deeper reframe came from the maintainers. An agent cannot be patched like software. It has to be secured like an employee. Identity, single sign-on, audit, containment, a layered architecture around a core that stays deliberately permissive. Nvidia wrangles advisories. Red Hat brings isolation. Microsoft brings identity. The permissive center is the value, and it is exactly what cannot be hardened without killing the thing.

  • Which surfaces the strangest fact of both nights. OpenAI employs the creator. A foundation holds the project. Microsoft ships a product built on it. Linux Foundation hosts the security conversation. Nvidia, Red Hat and Google maintain it. Everyone wants the lobster. Nobody can own it. The independence was designed in, on purpose, before the exit that tested it.

Imagination As Binding Constraint

So return to the sentence. Inside the company whose entire valuation rests on the next model, the person closest to the frontier says the next model is not the point. Five to ten years of change are available on intelligence already shipped. Morin put the same idea in market terms, calling the project the Linux of AI and the moment something like 1997, agents standing in for websites, a platform finally stable enough to build a decade of companies on.

Several maintainers described the vertigo a different way. Unlearning everything from twelve years of software engineering. The craft did not improve. It got reassigned.

If the models are not the bottleneck, the bottleneck moved somewhere harder to buy. Into taste, into the design of feedback loops, into whether a team can stay coherent while shipping at a speed that used to require ten times the people. Capability arrived as a commodity. Coherence did not.

What, then, is the constraint inside an organization that already has the same models everyone else does? Is the scarce resource compute, or the imagination to point it somewhere? And when the agents write all the code, what remains uniquely worth a human’s attention?
